First Day

So I have been blowing a lot of hot air about how I am taking this new job and I am going to work to live and stop living to work. So, of course, I said to my boss today, 'can I stay late?' Luckily, she looked at me like she was looking at a crooked picture on the wall and said, 'I don't know why you would want to stay late! Go explore Banff!' Yup, 7 hours in and I had already lost perspective. Luckily, my new boss seems to be Jedi master material.

Some observations about Banff in my first 24 hours. First off, I now know why our real estate agent said that it was a benefit that the condo we bought has our room is in the back. Last night I was awakened twice. The first time at 2:30am by someone giggling like they were being attacked by a pack of feather dusters. Then again at 3:30am by a couple having a huge fight. After work today I bought earplugs.

I have learned that if you have a day off during the week you can book yourself into the Banff Springs Hotel for a $100 'massage', that also gives you full access to all the different pools for the day at no extra charge.

The 15 minute drive between Canmore and Banff is viewed by locals as being obscenely long. Absolutely, not worth the trip unless you are going to pick up a new liver.

Exercise is mandatory. If you haven't biked, run, walked or done yoga in a 24 hour period, you get a ticket. From the exercise police. Then they poke you in the stomach and make the Pillsbury dough-boy sound.

Finally, my boss has some really exciting ideas about where our campus is going in the future. Three other people just started at the campus as well, one with me today. So I am going to be part of a new team. Everyone seems very laid back, they think they know of a book club I can join, and I have scouted out some lunch hour workout classes. So far so good. Would you all mind knocking on wood for me?

Just say NO to $100 massages

I am pleased to hear that you will have someone policing your exercise in my absence.
I concur with anonymous husband on the $100 massage especially since a small fraction of that price actually goes to the massage therapist.

I'm totally knocking on wood for you!

We should go cross country skiing this winter! I went with Jenn and it was SO MUCH FUN! or I could come up on Sat and we could go trail running. I'm up to 25 minutes! that will help keep the exercise police at bay!
