Let's Talk Actresses, Okay?

So my list of favorite actresses runs pretty much in this order

Kate Winslet
Gwyneth Paltrow
Reese Witherspoon

I think you can safely say that this is a dream list of first-class actress working today. All have Oscars except Kate Winslet (who was criminally robbed of getting the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Sense and Sensiblity by that powerhouse of acting Mira Sorvino - who? Exactly).

But over the last few weeks I have decided to expand my list and add two new favorites of mine: Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) and Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil).

I know, you are reading this list going, I understand Anne Hathway, but Milla Jovovich??? So let's start with her. Yes, she is your usual model-actress, but one of the reasons I like her is that she never stars in weak women roles. You may hate Resident Evil, but you have to appreciate the sheer popcornability of these movies. They are not great quailty, but they are great entertainment. In these movies she always plays the kick-ass role. Now none of these is going to win her an Oscar, but there are no other actresses out there who is the female equivlaent of the female action hero. Sure Angelina Jolie did Tomb Raider, but Milla has been cornering the market on female action hero roles: 5th Element, Resident Evil, Ultra Violet. I am glad to say she does not star in shlok like You, Me and Dupree. She doesn't seem to do girlfriend roles, the cliche wife, or the stupid love interest. So though none of her roles will make people compare her to Katherine Hepburn, she has my vote for strong femine role model, who is more believable kicking butt IMHO than Tom Cruise will ever be as Ethan Hunt.

Next let's look at Anne Hathway. Now not only is she old Hollywood beautiful, she has that kind of star quaility that makes you go to the movies she is in just because she is starring in it. The main reason to love the Princess Diaries or Ella Enchanted is because she was in them. Now with her breakthrough in the Devil Wears Prada, we should start seeing more of her. I think more than any of the other young actresses out there: Natalie Portman, Kristen Dunst she has the ability to be the next Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock.
