Metonymy

Metonymy is a figure of speech consisting of the using the name of one thing for that of another of which it is an attribute or with which it is associated - ie: He met his Waterloo.

Is this not the most fabulous term? It has started so many ideas percolating in my mind! I do worry, however that if I don't constrain myself it could easily become over used. You could find yourself bowled over by the power of it. Like,

Painting A Fence: It was a 'wax on, wax off' moment!

Dancing at a your parent's retirment party: He's so American Bandstand!

Losing Your Virginity: Let's just say he parted her Red Sea!

It is sicker than Sudko!
